The Secret My Son Kept From Me

Denise’s panicked voice nearly made Laura spill her coffee. For two months, Laura had believed her sixteen-year-old son, Nathan, was spending every weekend at his best friend Cole’s house. But Denise had just revealed something terrifying: she hadn’t seen Nathan in weeks, either. Every Friday, the boys had told their mothers the same story, leaving both women convinced their children were safe with each other. Now neither boy was answering his phone. Through tears, Nathan explained that he and Cole had been helping Grandpa Frank preserve Michael’s unfinished woodworking projects before Frank sold the family home. One of those projects was a rocking chair Michael had started building before Nathan was born. The boys had spent weeks sanding the wood, repairing the chair, and saving pieces of their father’s workshop. Nathan admitted he had been afraid Laura would forbid the visits. His words hurt because they revealed something Laura had tried not to see: her son had been grieving in silence, searching for a connection to the father he had lost. But when Laura finally agreed to visit the workshop, she discovered that the rocking chair wasn’t the only thing Nathan had been desperately trying to saveContinue Reading…
