Just three weeks after giving birth to her daughter, Sophie, Emily found herself facing a terrifying medical emergency. Experiencing severe abdominal pain and unexpected bleeding, she begged her husband, Daniel, to take her to the hospital. Instead of helping, he accused her of being dramatic, dragged her into the bathroom, and locked the door from the outside. As their newborn daughter cried in her arms, Emily desperately searched for a way to get help. Fortunately, she had already contacted emergency services, and the dispatcher was still listening through her concealed phone. When Emily explained that her husband had locked them inside, the calm voice reassured her that help was coming. But then she overheard Daniel speaking with his mother, Patricia, about some mysterious paperwork. Moments later, documents were pushed underneath the bathroom door, and Daniel demanded that she sign them before he would let her leave. The first document granted him power of attorney, while another concerned temporary guardianship of Sophie. Emily couldn’t understand why her husband was asking for such serious legal authority while she was fighting to receive medical attention. When officers finally opened the bathroom door, they immediately recognized that Emily needed urgent medical attention. At the hospital, doctors discovered that she was experiencing significant postpartum bleeding and possible retained tissue. Fortunately, they managed to stabilize her condition, and Sophie was examined and found to be healthy. Meanwhile, Officer Laura Bennett returned with information that made Emily’s situation even more frightening. Investigators had discovered a folder in Daniel’s office containing psychiatric assessments and medical records suggesting that Emily was mentally unstable. The problem was that she had never received treatment from the physician identified in those documents. Even more concerning, Daniel had recently approached a family-law attorney about obtaining emergency custody of Sophie. When Emily recognized the name of the psychiatrist whose signature appeared on the paperwork, she remembered meeting him at her baby shower through Patricia. Why would her mother-in-law introduce a psychiatrist who apparently had nothing to do with Emily’s medical care?
