PART 2 : What He Sewed Inside

With trembling fingers, Frances opened the package. Inside were dozens of envelopes, photographs, and a letter dated April 14, 2005. It was the birthday of Rose, the little daughter Frances and Arthur had lost just three days after her birth in 1986. Frances had always believed that Rose had died peacefully without anyone touching her after her final breath. But Arthur’s letter revealed a secret he had carried alone for nearly forty years. On the morning Rose died, doctors had asked him to consider donating one of her healthy heart valves to a newborn boy who desperately needed it. Frances was seriously ill and unconscious, so Arthur had made the decision alone. He agreed, knowing it might give another baby a chance to survive. But when Frances later begged him to promise that nobody had touched their daughter, he couldn’t bring himself to tell her the truth. He lied, and he spent the rest of his life regretting it. The envelopes contained nearly four decades of letters from the boy’s mother and, later, from the boy himself, Daniel.

They described birthdays, school achievements, surgeries, nursing school, and eventually a little girl named Rose, chosen to honor the baby who had helped save his life. Arthur had even met Daniel before his death, but never found the courage to tell Frances. After days of anger, grief, and reflection, Frances finally called him. “My name is Fran Delaney,” she whispered. “I’m Rose’s mother.” Daniel broke down in tears. They eventually met at Arthur’s favorite Waffle House, where Frances met the man whose life had been touched by her daughter’s final gift. She realized she could still be angry about Arthur’s lie while understanding the impossible decision he had faced. Later, she visited Rose’s grave and told her husband she forgave him. The old couch remained with Eli and Mila, who had repaired its underside and left a little pocket beneath the middle cushion. One day, Mila slipped a drawing inside. It showed three people sitting close together, with the words: “THIS COUCH MAKES YOU SIT CLOSER.” And Frances finally understood. Arthur hadn’t been holding on to an old piece of furniture. He had been holding on to the memory of their daughter, the love of his family, and the extraordinary life that had begun with her final gift.
