The Night My Son Set a Place at the Table for My Dead Husband

I thought grief had already shown me its worst until my son invited me to dinner two years after my husband Robert passed away.

I arrived at Michael’s home carrying an apple pie, expecting nothing more than a quiet family evening.

The house smelled strangely familiar, reminding me of Robert’s old aftershave.

When I entered the dining room, my heart nearly stopped.

There were four place settings even though only three of us were there.

The empty chair sat at the head of the table exactly where Robert had always sat.

I asked Michael why his father’s place was waiting.

My son instantly turned pale while his wife Vanessa hurried from the room without saying a word.

Michael finally looked at me and whispered, “Mom… there’s something we’ve hidden from you for two years.”

Vanessa returned carrying a small wooden box that I immediately recognized as Robert’s old tackle box.

I was certain it had been sitting untouched in our farmhouse basement.

Michael quietly explained that the one at home was only a copy.

He pushed the real box toward me and said Robert had given it to him weeks before his death with strict instructions not to reveal it until exactly two years had passed.

Inside was a letter addressed to me along with old photographs and documents from a life I had never known.

I reached for the letter with shaking hands, but Michael stopped me before I could unfold it.

Then he quietly said the sentence that shattered everything I believed about the man I had loved for forty-one years.
