The Divorce Papers Beside the Salt Shaker

“I don’t think we’re meant to grow old together.” Those were the words my husband, Greg, spoke on a Thursday evening in October, standing in our kitchen with his coat still on. I was stirring a pot of chili, his favorite, with extra beans and a pinch of cinnamon, just the way his grandmother used to make it. The radio played softly in the background, and I was humming while thinking about our spring vacation to the Smoky Mountains. After twenty-two years of marriage, I believed I knew every little thing about the man I loved. I never imagined that a single sentence could turn our familiar kitchen into a place I barely recognized. When I asked him what he had said, he didn’t answer. Instead, I heard paper rustling before he placed a thick manila envelope on the table beside the salt shaker. His eyes were red, and his hands remained buried in his coat pockets. “Divorce papers, Claire,” he finally said. I laughed because surely he was joking. We had a daughter in college, a mortgage, a golden retriever named Biscuit, and a lifetime of memories that still made me smile. Greg kissed my forehead every morning before work, held my hand at the grocery store, and never forgot to ask whether I needed anything when he stopped for coffee. Nothing about our ordinary, comfortable life had prepared me for those words. “Very funny,” I told him, turning back toward the stove. “Take your coat off. Dinner’s almost ready.” But he didn’t move, and the seriousness in his voice made my smile disappear.

“I’m not joking,” he said quietly. He explained that he had already signed the papers, spoken to a lawyer, and planned to spend the night at a hotel before finding an apartment over the weekend. My wooden spoon slipped from my fingers and struck the tile, splattering chili across the floor. Biscuit hurried over to investigate, while I stood frozen, trying to understand how the man who had shared my bed for twenty-two years could suddenly be preparing to leave it. “What happened? What did I do?” I asked, my voice barely recognizable. Greg insisted that I had done nothing wrong. He said we had grown apart, that we wanted different things, but when I begged him to explain what those things were, he had no answer. I asked whether there was another woman, and he immediately swore there wasn’t. I believed him, which somehow made everything more painful. If he wasn’t leaving me for someone else, then what could possibly be strong enough to destroy the life we’d built together? I raised my voice, something I had rarely done during our marriage, and demanded an explanation. He flinched, whispered that he was sorry, and walked out through the back door. I listened to his car disappear down the street before turning toward the envelope on the table. My hands trembled as I opened it, expecting to find nothing but legal documents and a signature that would end our marriage. Instead, tucked between the papers, I discovered a handwritten note that began with five words I never expected to read: Claire, please forgive me, becausez…Continue Reading…
