The Emergency Call That Came From Her Own Number

It started with a faint rustling sound outside her bedroom window. At first, the woman tried to ignore it, convincing herself that it was probably the wind moving branches or a small animal passing through the yard. But the noise came again. Then again. Something about the timing made her uneasy. She lived alone, and the darkness outside made it impossible to see clearly beyond the glass. After listening for several minutes, she finally decided not to take any chances. She picked up her phone and called emergency services, explaining that she had heard something moving outside her home. The dispatcher listened carefully, asked a few questions, and began gathering the information needed to send officers to check the property. Everything seemed like a routine emergency call until the dispatcher suddenly said something that made the woman stop talking. She insisted she had not called anyone before that moment. She was certain she had only just picked up her phone and dialed emergency services. The dispatcher repeated the information, seemingly just as confused as she was. There was no obvious explanation for how an earlier report could have been connected to her number when she had no memory of making it. By then, the woman was no longer concerned only about the rustling outside her window. She was wondering whether someone had been inside her home, whether there had been a mistake in the emergency system, or whether something stranger had happened. When officers finally arrived, they would discover nothing unusual outside, but the unanswered question surrounding that first call would make the entire experience even more disturbing..CONTINUE READING
