The Man Who Chose to Walk Beside Her

Travis said it over Tuesday supper, just two days before senior night. My seventeen-year-old daughter, Kaylee, had asked him to walk her across the gym floor during the ceremony. Instead, he told her he didn’t want to take the place of her biological father, Ryan, who had disappeared from her life years ago. Kaylee simply said, “Fine,” rinsed her plate, and went upstairs without slamming her bedroom door. Somehow, that quiet response hurt more than any argument could have.

I wanted to defend her, but I also wanted Travis to understand something without being forced to understand it. For nine years, he had driven her to volleyball practice, built her a hitting net behind his seed shed, and tracked her statistics on a clipboard nobody had asked him to keep. He had learned to braid hair using orange baler twine because Kaylee once asked whether he could. Yet he still seemed afraid to call himself her dad. My father, Duane, was seventy-nine, walked with a cane after hip surgery, and had spent fifty-one years milking cows on our family farm. Kaylee had grown up following him around those fields. “I want it to be just him,” she told me. So I changed the school paperwork and called Dad. He listened quietly before asking what time he needed to arrive. I didn’t tell Travis what I had arranged. On Thursday evening, when the side door finally opened and my father entered in his Sunday coat, polished shoes, and green seed corn cap, Travis turned toward me with a look I couldn’t explain. Then the ceremony began, and something happened that none of us had expectedContinue Reading…
