PART 2 : My Husband Held a Funeral for Me While I Was Still Alive

With the help of Sheriff Elena Shaw, I kept my survival secret while investigators examined the fire. The evidence began accumulating quickly. Digital security records showed that Grant had activated the cabin’s exterior locks shortly before the fire started. A trail camera captured his SUV leaving the property, while financial documents revealed suspicious transactions connected to Brooke. Then Nathan discovered a heat-resistant metal box hidden behind a stone panel in the emergency tunnel. Inside were company records, an amended trust, and a letter from my mother explaining why she had never trusted Grant. The trust protected my controlling interest in Northstar Air Rescue if I disappeared under suspicious circumstances, preventing him from seizing the company simply by declaring me dead. Investigators also uncovered letters from Nathan that Grant had secretly intercepted. My husband had known about my father and hidden the truth to protect his financial schemes. When Brooke finally agreed to cooperate with authorities, she provided a recording of Grant discussing his plans to collect the insurance money and take control of Northstar. The evidence was enough to secure arrest warrants. But I wanted to face the man who had stood beside my empty casket and convinced the world I was gone.

On the day of my memorial, I entered the chapel with Nathan beside me and Sheriff Shaw close behind. Grant was speaking about my legacy when he saw me walking toward the casket. His face turned pale. “Lena? This isn’t possible,” he whispered. I placed my phone on the casket and played his recorded words for everyone to hear. Moments later, deputies arrested him for suspected attempted murder, conspiracy, arson, and insurance fraud. His carefully constructed lies finally collapsed, and the investigation eventually led to a lengthy prison sentence. Brooke also faced criminal consequences for her involvement. A DNA test later confirmed Nathan was my biological father, and although we could never recover the years we had lost, we began building a relationship one day at a time. I returned to Northstar, protected my mother’s legacy, and established a mountain safety program in her memory. The cabin where Grant had tried to end my life became the foundation for a project designed to protect other families. Holding my newborn son beside the hospital window, I finally understood that survival was about more than escaping a burning building. Grant had prepared an empty casket because he believed he could decide how my story ended. Instead, I returned to reclaim my life, my family, and the future he had tried to steal.
