I was thirty-four when my parents turned my entire life into an ultimatum.

If I didn’t marry before thirty-five, they would cut me out of their inheritance. They didn’t care about my happiness, only appearances. My career as an architect meant nothing to them compared to being able to say their daughter was “properly settled.” Every family dinner became pressure, comparisons, and subtle insults disguised as concern.

Stan moved into my home and quickly adapted—calm, helpful, observant. He fixed things around the house and never overstepped.
