PART2 : The Secret Behind His Morning Coffee

Inside the envelope were medical records revealing that Brad had suffered a serious brain injury in a car accident six months earlier. His memory was deteriorating, and Chloe had been helping him attend neurological appointments. She admitted that they had briefly had an affair before the accident, but insisted it had ended. She also revealed that Brad had never planned to leave me. He had wanted to confess everything, including his illness and his betrayal. But the envelope contained something even more frightening: evidence that someone had deliberately caused his accident. Then we discovered an unfamiliar phone hidden beneath Brad’s pillow. A voicemail played, and I heard my own voice warning Brad not to trust anyone who blamed him for the accident. Someone had secretly recorded me, photographed me sleeping, and planted a prescription bottle with my name on it. When Brad finally appeared, terrified and confused, he whispered, “I’m trying to protect you from me.” The truth was that someone wanted us both to doubt our own memories.

The person behind everything was Daniel, Brad’s identical twin brother, who had supposedly died twenty-seven years earlier. He had actually disappeared after a family dispute and returned to claim half their father’s inheritance. When Brad discovered evidence exposing his brother’s deception, Daniel forced their car off the road, stole the documents, and spent months manipulating them through fake recordings, photographs, and carefully planted evidence. The police eventually found Daniel living under another name, along with the original documents and photographs of me sleeping in our bedroom. He was arrested, and the mystery finally ended. But our marriage needed more than an arrest to heal. Brad and I entered counseling, faced his affair honestly, and slowly learned to trust each other again. Almost a year later, he made me coffee in two plain white mugs. “I don’t want to forget any of it,” he told me. “Not even the bad days.” And as our mugs touched in the morning sunshine, I realized something important: sometimes starting over isn’t about forgetting the past. It’s about finally being able to face the truth without being afraid.
