Melissa suddenly insisted on planning my late husband’s memorial reunion.
She had always avoided family events and acted distant toward me.
Still, I felt hopeful when she began calling me every week.
She said the event would honor Frank perfectly with full planning.
Soon she asked me for three thousand dollars for deposits and venue.
I trusted her and sent the money without hesitation.
Then came more requests for catering, photos, and decorations.
Altogether I gave her almost five thousand dollars in total.
On the morning of the reunion I dressed carefully for Frank’s memory.
When I arrived at the community center, the doors were locked.
Confused, I called Derek asking if I was at wrong place.
He said Melissa told him I canceled the reunion myself.
My stomach dropped because I had never said that at all.
They were all at a pizza place instead, according to Derek.
I drove there shaking, hoping it was just a misunderstanding.
Inside Tony’s Pizza my entire family was already seated uncomfortably.
Melissa greeted me warmly as if nothing unusual had happened.
I asked where the venue and catering had gone immediately.
She calmly said there were complications and last-minute cancellations.
Then she claimed I had only contributed a small amount of money.
Derek looked at me uncertainly as she questioned my memory.
“That’s not what happened.” I said quietly, feeling my voice shake.
But the way everyone looked at me made my chest tighten.
Melissa smiled like she already knew they would believe her version.
