Eight Weeks After My Inheritance, My Husband Walked Away Forever

The roast beef was still warm when my husband dropped divorce papers onto our dining table.

I had spent hours preparing a special anniversary dinner because I thought we were celebrating fifteen years together.

Instead, Gary stood in the doorway and calmly told me he wanted a divorce.

He said he had been unhappy for years and wanted a fresh start.

Then he informed me that he expected half of everything.

The timing was impossible to ignore.

Only eight weeks earlier, my late mother had left me more than two million dollars.

Before the inheritance, Gary constantly complained about money and his career.

After the inheritance, he suddenly became attentive and started making plans for expensive houses, boats, and luxury vacations.

When I refused to hand over control of the money, his attitude changed.

Now he was leaving.

As he walked out the door, my phone buzzed with a message from my best friend, Pamela.

She claimed she was worried about me and said Gary had already told her everything.

The message arrived so quickly that something felt wrong.

Looking back, I remembered all the strange moments between them that I had ignored.

My mother had never trusted Pamela.

She once warned me that Pamela always wanted what belonged to other people.

At the time, I dismissed it as unnecessary suspicion.

Now those warnings echoed in my head.

The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that Gary and Pamela knew much more than they should.

Instead of calling her, I got into my car and drove to her condo.

When I turned onto her street, my heart nearly stopped.

Gary had told me he was staying at a hotel.

But his car was parked directly outside Pamela’s building.

The lights inside her condo glowed through the curtains as I stepped closer.

From where I stood, I could already see two figures celebrating together.

And I suddenly realized my marriage had probably been over long before tonight.
