I Came Home Early and Found My Wife Hurt on the Floor While My Son Laughed in the Kitchen

My conference ended two days early, so I decided to surprise my wife.

I bought her favorite pastries, grabbed a bottle of wine, and drove home smiling.

After twenty years of marriage, I still loved seeing Sarah’s face light up when I walked through the door unexpectedly.

But the moment I arrived, something felt wrong.

The front door was partly open.

The porch lights were already on.

And the house smelled strangely metallic.

I stepped inside and froze.

Sarah was sitting on the floor beside the couch.

Blood ran from a cut above her eyebrow onto her cream-colored shirt.

The pastry box slipped from my hands.

I rushed to her side.

Before I could even ask what happened, she tried to explain.

That hurt almost as much as seeing the blood.

Then I heard laughter coming from the kitchen.

My son Michael was laughing.

His wife Olivia was there too.

So were David and Jessica.

They were eating dinner like nothing had happened.

Meanwhile, my wife was bleeding ten feet away.

I asked Sarah who hurt her.

She looked toward the kitchen.

Then she whispered something that made my stomach turn.

“I told them I wouldn’t sign.”

I followed her gaze to the coffee table.

There were legal papers spread across it.

Property transfer forms.

Deed documents.

A black pen waiting beside them.

The papers were for Sarah’s beach house.

The one her late mother left her.

The one Michael had been pressuring us to sell for months.

Then Sarah quietly revealed the truth.

Michael had grabbed her arm.

She pulled away.

And struck her head on the table.

I looked toward the kitchen and realized nobody there expected me home until Sunday.

Whatever had happened in this house was supposed to stay hidden for two more days.

Then I pulled out my phone and dialed 911.
