Millions See ‘WC’ Every Day Without Knowing What It Actually Means2

Around the world, the room containing a toilet goes by many different names.

In the United States, people commonly say bathroom or restroom.

In Canada, washroom is especially popular.

In the United Kingdom, many people simply call it the loo.

Some countries prefer lavatory.

Others continue using WC.

Interestingly, many of these names don’t make perfect sense.

A public bathroom often contains no bath.

A restroom isn’t usually used for resting.

And a water closet rarely resembles a closet.

The names survived because language often keeps old habits alive.

The term WC became popular during the late nineteenth century when indoor toilets were separate from bathing spaces.

Later, bathrooms combined both functions into a single room.

But the older terminology never completely disappeared.

Today, WC is often used because it is easy for international travelers to recognize regardless of language.

That’s why it frequently appears in airports, train stations, hotels, and tourist destinations.

Some language variations are even more unusual.

In Esperanto, a constructed international language, the restroom is called “necesejo.”

The word roughly means “necessary place.”

Meanwhile, people around the world continue debating which term makes the most sense.

Washroom.

Bathroom.

Restroom.

Lavatory.

Loo.

Or WC.

No matter which name you use, they all describe the same essential destination.

And now, the next time you spot a WC sign while traveling, you’ll know that those two simple letters are actually a small piece of plumbing history that has survived for more than a century.
